January 2009

Happy New Year!  Now What?
This is a great time of the year to reflect what’s working, what isn’t working, and what needs my attention.  For me, 2008 was a year of many successes and disappointments.  That’s how life is; this year was no exception.  Yet, I am so grateful to the nearly five hundred professionals that I met in 2008 who either chose to learn from me at one of my presentations or decided to work with me one-on-one.

One challenge for 2009 is to ask yourself, “Who are the people I admire, and how can I attract more people like that into my life?”  This is particularly important during a job search to attract employers with similar values and interests.  For me, two professional career coaches that I admire and am exceedingly grateful that they are in my life are Robin Sheerer and Jack Chapman.  Both are authors:  No More Blue Mondays and Negotiating Your Salary: How to Make $1000 a Minute respectively.  Both Robin Sheerer and Jack Chapman are premier career coaches because they have a passion for telling the truth, creating ways for those in transition to be clear about what’s next for them, and they are open to making mistakes and learning from them.  They make me a better, smarter career strategist and the collaborations we have had over the years gave me tools to reach clients in ways I would not have had otherwise.  What I’ve learned is that mutual support from like-minded professionals is the best way to go.

Mutual support is an important tool when making a career change, too.  Who would that be for you?  What professionals do you want to learn from?  What professionals would make your life easier and more prosperous?  What would you give back to them?  My challenge for you in 2009 is to be clear about what’s next for you.  Be clear about how to create support and move forward.  Be willing to make some mistakes and keep going.

Upcoming Events and Resources Next Week!
There are some great workshops and webinars in January. Robin Sheerer offers a workshop called Endings and Beginnings that is well worth the drive to Chicago to attend.  It will be two Saturday mornings January 17 and February 7.  This is an inspiring workshop to put closure on the past and create an inspiring future.  For details or to register: call 708-524-4850 or send an e-mail to: careerprz@aol.com.  I make it my practice to attend as often as I can.  It will really help you get clear about what heart-based goals you want to make and how to line up the support you will need to follow through.

Sign up for the free webinar before the Wednesday morning, January 14.  There are four webinar / teleconferences in January offered through www.lucrativecareersinc.com that offer best-in-class learning.  My favorite is More Done, More Fun!  Jack Chapman is passionate about helping professionals get to where they want to be, and a big component of that is creating time and structure for it.  Job hunters in particular will learn how to balance other life priorities with their search.

Want to Job Interview Better?
Take an inventory of your strengths and get really good about talking about them.  Mama told us to not brag on ourselves, but that advice doesn’t work in a job interview.  If you don’t tell them what you’re good at, who will?  Call Shary Raske at (314) 560-1088 or email her at shary@courageouschange.net for more information.

One Secret for a Successful Career Transition
One of the secrets of a successful career transition is to surround yourself with people who ask you the right questions.  Here are a few examples:  Are you going too fast or too slowly to build momentum?  Did you make a plan and follow it?  Are your efforts generating interest in what you want to accomplish?

Do you know someone whose career needs CPR?   I work with career changers who want to get to where they want to be smarter, and more effectively!  If you know someone who is unhappy or stuck in their career, perhaps a Career Planning Readiness meeting may be just the thing to get back on track.   Find out how Shary Raske, Career Strategist, can help. Available nationally through tele-coaching or one-on-one in the St. Louis region.  Call today for details (314) 560-1088.
