Relax!

I woke up in the middle of the night to experience severe wind gusts that caused me to ask myself, “Do I need to go to the basement?”  This morning, a good friend of mine said, “You’re going to need cement shoes to get around in wind like this!”

It reminded me of another time when I was traveling by air and we hit some horrible turbulence.  There were all of us white-knuckled adults, looking straight ahead so they wouldn’t see each other’s fear, and suddenly the plane sunk and came back up so severely that it made my stomach lurch.  And just as suddenly a little boy in the back of the plane went, “Wheeeeee!”

A wave of relief began to spread throughout the plane as the little boy said, “Wheee…” again.  With his perspective most of us, myself included, began to relax.  The turbulence didn’t get any better for a while, but now all of us, had a different way of responding that felt almost innocent in the face of danger.

What an adventure this life of ours is!
Sometimes we need cement shoes to keep us on course.  Yes, the walk is more difficult, but with perseverance we get to where we want to be.  Then there are those of us trapped in turbulence we did not cause.  Most of us initially will react with fear and a sense of powerlessness.  Yet if we have the perspective of a child, other possibilities present themselves.

During this holiday season, those of us who are Christian will prepare to celebrate the birth of another child.  A dear friend of mine once commented that the Christian faith could be summed up in one word:  Relax!  For me it was a startling conclusion, yet more than ever as we support each other in this time of upheaval and celebration, the word “Relax” does seem right.  The next time you hit a gust of wind or unexpected turbulence, try out the word: “Wheeee!”
