An Object in Motion Tends to Get Tired After a While
An Object at Rest Tends to Stay in Motion

You say you want to make a career change, but do you really?  It’s a new year and I don’t know about you, but there’s something about starting in a fresh decade that seems to make anything possible.  What is standing in the way of the life that you want?  You’ve heard that you just have to get better organized, or get a focus, or learn current career transition methods.  Mostly from me, I’ve asked you if you have a comprehensive plan with success metrics built in to evaluate if you are on track.  All of these factors are important; yet there is an often overlooked, yet absolutely essential element to having the life you want:  sleep.  I was shocked to learn that a chronically sleep-deprived person actually concentrates worse than someone who is legally intoxicated  Pretend you are living this scenario:

You are tired.  You are working a full time job and going to school full time.  You see your eleven year old son on Tuesdays.  Your husband travels and is only home on the weekends.  You know that when you finish your executive MBA, you will go for an even higher level of executive leadership.  And you are tired.  Seriously tired.  You have this nagging feeling that this pace isn’t good for you, but you push that thought down, and keep going.

There is nothing wrong with being ambitious.  Men and women are achieving what they want to achieve everyday.  Yet the most successful professionals in the long run get enough sleep.  How often do you carve out extra time by sacrificing sleep?  One of the first things I do when working with a new client is to evaluate how that professional uses their time.  Less than six hours of sleep each night for more than 90 days is a red flag.  Yet it is so socially acceptable to push beyond your human limits!  This behavior is even admired.  However, the body has limits.  It has a built in survival mechanism that will make you sick before you literally leave this world permanently.

Without enough sleep it is difficult to meaningfully connect to another human being.  If you’re brain is behaving like someone legally intoxicated, it will be difficult to enlist others into your cause.  Why?  Because you are not there.  Something mechanical comes out instead of your heart.  Then your only option is to achieve by force and then everyone loses, including you.

Have you ever been like that, knowing you need to stop, but you just keep pushing to the point of exhaustion?  Do you rebel even at the thought of taking two weeks off alone, with no cell phone, no electronics, and no newspapers?  Could you even let go and rest for just one day?

My work is to help career changers get to where they want to be.  Sleep is an overlooked asset.  If you are chronically tired, you may need to change your lifestyle before you can move forward with your career.  Sometimes, a medical evaluation for a sleep issues is needed.  Sometimes the issue is related to unresolved psychological issues, and therapy is needed.  Sometimes it’s just a bad habit that needs to stop.  It is possible to be both in motion and being rested.

It’s a new year, and the life you want is calling.  Sweet dreams!
