Leadership Alert - The status quo is seriously broken There are hundreds of books out there that define critical leadership skills or leadership competencies as they are commonly referred to. No one would argue about the need for critical leadership skills. However, what ultimately determines leadership success cannot be measured and assessed with our traditional leadership development approaches. The global economic and financial crisis revealed this shocking truth, i.e. decision making did not follow the expected sequential four step path. New York Times columnist David Brooks’ in his recent op-ed piece The Behavioral Revolution broadly defines the four steps to any decision as 1. Perceive a situation 2. Think of possible courses of action 3. Calculate which course is in your best interest 4. Take the action Brooks highlights that “Over the past few centuries, public policy analysts have assumed that step three is the most important. Economic models and entire social science disciplines are premised on the assumption that people are mostly engaged in rationally calculating and maximizing their self-interest. But during this financial crisis, that way of thinking has failed spectacularly.” It revealed human frailty in our capacity for decision making. Brooks postulates the possibility of altering our view of decision-making, shifting our focus from "step three, rational calculation, to step one, perception.” This shift in focus is an interesting one and one that brings an array of challenges with it. We know that our perception becomes our reality but it is not the reality, like the map is not the territory. Our map is only a representation of the external circumstances. People interpret events in limited ways and the disparity between interpretations can lead to communication and decision-making problems. Most of us think that our perceptions of reality are the truth, but the truth is subjective. Two people can look at the same thing, but what they see is very different based on their model of the world. According to quantum physics, reality is subject to the expectations of the individual. That is why we don’t always get what we want, but we do get what we expect. While we may never hear the full story about the decision-making process that led to the current global economic and financial crisis, it serves as a wakeup call for us all. Eric Patrick Marr captures it well in his recent ACE Weekly Guest Essay “The status quo is seriously broken and imagination and innovation are in ultra-high demand.” Professional and financial security are illusions. Getting to the Essence Now is the time to rethink, reframe and renew everything. Traditional leadership development with a focus on skill and competency development is not only inadequate for 21st century leadership, it has proven to have dire global economic and financial consequences. It is time to ask ourselves the questions – Who am I? Where have I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? We are all here for a purpose whether we choose to believe it or not. Today’s world calls for grass-root leadership development, a radically different leadership development; one that connects every person with their higher purpose and innate leadership, transforming humanity by embracing its identity and invaluable creative abilities.

Leading by Example - a challenge or natural alignment? Leading by example is frequently talked about in the context of what leaders ‘should, must’ or ‘need to do.’ It implies a prescriptive way of leading; a kind of obligation that doesn’t feel natural to leaders. So is it any wonder that we rarely see leaders leading by example? Our focus in traditional leadership development is predominantly on leadership skill development premised on the belief that leaders aren’t born, they are developed. Unearthing and cultivating the innate qualities of leadership are not part of the traditional leadership development equation. The leadership qualities are imposed as qualities leaders ‘should’ have, based on a set of qualities of a great leader or a select group of leaders. This can be likened to imposing design specifications that are out of alignment with the fundamental structural framework of the completed dream house. It is challenging and costly if it can be rectified at all. When we approach leadership development from the premise that leaders are born, and leadership skills are developed, we change the whole equation. We recognize leading by example as something we naturally do when our actions, words and choices are aligned with our innate purpose or soul’s purpose. The focus here is on remembering who we are, where we came from, why we are here and where we are going. It’s about freeing ourselves from the mask of social conditioning we have allowed to define us. Leadership development is first and foremost about re-discovering our innate identity - our unique gifts and soul’s purpose - and expressing it with courage and volition in the world. Leadership skill development follows and becomes specific to the level and context in which we want to express our leadership. There are no two leaders with the same innate purpose and set of unique gifts and qualities. When we lead from the inside out, leading by example becomes effortless because our whole way of being is congruently aligned with who we are at the core. It becomes our leadership brand that makes us naturally stand out wherever we are and in whatever we do. Unearthing our innate identity is ‘the most valuable investment’ we can ever make in ourselves. It is priceless! It is ‘the foundation’ for a vibrant, happy and fulfilled life.
