Notes from the Chair

As newly elected chair of the Northwest Region, my background includes about 20 years of membership, participation on Council (and in AAPC until they changed the bylaws) as advocacy representative, and continuing interest in the work of pastoral counseling.  As a psychologist, there's a lot I don't do and a lot I don't know about what you do, so I need to hear from you where I go astray. I would like to hear everyone's concerns, suggestions, etc., about how we can best conduct our business to serve our members and provide pastoral counseling services to those who need them.  My thanks in making a transition to this position go especially to Marcia Matthaei, my mentor for the tasks I'll be doing.

Here are several people you need to keep high on your list of e-mail correspondents:

Sally Wing, drswing@webtv.net
Clint McNair, Regional Treasurer, mcnairc@seattleu.edu
John Carr, Fall 2009 Conference Coordinator, pthyanded@shaw.ca
Eddy Crouch, Regional newsletter editor/webmaster, editor@aapcnorthwestregion.org

Our Fall 2008 conference at University Place, Portland, included a presentation by Terry Gibson, long time Regional member (see thank you below).  AAPC President Joretta Marshall led a focus group for the AAPC Multicultural Competencies and Racial Justice Project, which plans an AAPC program on diversity at the 2010 conference. We responded to questions about diversity, racism, and multicultural competency.

Plans are under way for the 2009 Fall Conference at Seattle University, under the leadership of John Carr.  Please share with him your ideas for speakers, workshops, format, etc.

—Sally Wing, NW Region Chair

Terry Kriesel writes from Taiwan

Here I am (3rd from the right, bottom row) for the graduation picture at China Lutheran Seminary, Hsinchu, Taiwan.  How did a 66 year old Puget Island, Washington, retired ELCA Pastor and Pastoral Counselor /Psychologist end up here you ask?

Well, I'm not sure.  I suspect God kicked me in the "you know what" again when I wasn't looking (I'm too stubborn for anything more gentle).  I remember being a professor in the University of Iowa College of Medicine and then moving to Arizona and teaching at the University of Arizona and being pastoral counselor to clergy and families in the Grand Canyon Synod.

Oh yeah, now I remember. Carol and I retired and moved to Puget Island (Cathlamet), Washington.  And, oh yeah, I got bored again (that ADHD never gives up).  Carol told me, "Go do what you need to do and I will be here when you come back."  And so I contacted the ELCA  Board of Missions and they sent me to CLS in Taiwan to teach pastoral care and counseling in their M.A. in pastoral counseling program (crisis counseling, family therapy, case conference, chemical dependency, advising students on their theses, etc.).  And here I am in this picture after teaching for a year there.

I am returning in Spring 2009 to teach for another semester and then we will see.  I will tell you, I have never had so much fun teaching in my whole life.  The students are bright and eager to learn and enthusiastic about helping others.  They have taught me a thing or two about prayer and really living under God's care.  I have even learned a little Mandarin.  So don't let anyone tell you that retirement is the end of anything.  Its just the beginning of a new adventure — if you want it!  So when you retire, watch out. God might grab you when you're not looking

—Dr. Terry Kriesel, AAPC Diplomate (ret.)

Inspirational Poem

Mindful

Every day
I see or hear
something
that more or less

kills me
with delight,
that leaves me
like a needle

in the haystack
of light.
It was what I was born for -
to look, to listen,

 to lose myself
inside this soft world -
to instruct myself
over and over

in joy,
and acclamation.
Nor am I talking
about the exceptional,

the fearful, the dreadful,
the very extravagant -
but of the ordinary,
the common, the very drab,

the daily presentations.
Oh, good scholar,
I say to myself,
how can you help

but grow wise
with such teachings
as these -
the untrimmable light

of the world,
the ocean's shine,
the prayers that are made
out of grass?
