"Strengthen your portfolio companies" is the consistent mantra chanted by respected, knowledgeable M&A gurus all over the U.S.. Gurus like Chris O'Brien of Investcorp International, Advent International's Managing Partner Steve Tadler, Vin Raina - Managing Director of Boston Ventures, Michael Psaros - Co-Founder and Managing Partner of KPS Capital Partners, etc.. 

The chant continues with "stabilize the portfolio companies, improve operations, and focus on the bottom-line." The larger question, however, is how many PE firms have the talent onboard to achieve those tasks - Very, Very, Very Few.  So what do they do?

Anyone interested in the PE world continually gather at conferences, breakfasts, lunches or wherever a group can gather to learn what these M&A gurus have say about the future of PE. The gurus continually make it clear that one's skills in

operational improvements for portfolio companies is the mantra that will determine what PE firms will still be around in when the dust clears. When will the dust clear? The consensus predictions are in 12-24 months. At that time greater than 50% of the presently existing PE firms will be history.

And what about focusing on the improving the Top Line?
