As a HiringSmart affiliate, The Quest Connection is delighted to offer a suite of powerful assessment tools so business owners and managers can recruit the talent that best fits their culture and the job at hand. This month, I’ll focus on Assessments for Sales Departments.

Administered on the Internet, the Profile Sales Assessment™ is very easy to use. Detailed reports are instantly available and written in language that is easily understood by salespeople.

Reading and Learning Lately: Conversations Among Masters

I’ve just returned from the Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico where I attended the Conversations Among Masters Conference. This is my fourth year at this unique conversation. Speakers are called “Conversation Starters” and we have an engaging conversation among my coaching peers and the catalysts who get the conversation going. This year, we heard from Brian Johnson of www.philosophernotes.com who has created the “Cliff Notes™” version of the top personal growth books – giving you “more wisdom in less time.” What intrigued me about Brian is his commitment to his practices. He doesn’t begin his work day without a significant chunk of time devoted to exercise, nutrition, meditation and journaling. He finds he is more creative that way and able to zero in on what really matters most to him. He is the ultimate example of what it means to live in Covey’s Quadrant II – working on the important, but not urgent, items on our task lists. If you’re not familiar with Stephen Covey’s four quadrants, you can get a free download of Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Successful People at Brian’s site.
We also met Don Miguel Ruiz and his son, Don Jose Ruiz, authors of The Fifth Agreement. Don Miguel Ruiz first became well known in spreading Toltec knowledge with his best selling book, The Four Agreements. The Fifth Agreement is a fundamental tool in expanding your view of the world and seeing beyond your limitations. "The Four Agreements provides the foundation for breaking thousands of agreements that create needless suffering and with The Fifth Agreement you recover all the power of your authenticity, which is who you really are when you are born.” Visit www.thefifthagreement.com. When we give up our agreements with the conceptual world, and begin to live from the heart, we take back our power from some of the belief systems we’ve learned that hold us back from our true potential. This book will challenge your conception of the world and open you up to new possibilities and peace.
And one of my favorite discoveries at the Conference was this video on Validation. Even if you watch just the first few minutes, you’ll get the idea of how starved we humans are for Acknowledgement.
 Enjoy!

Let’s Team Up to Make More Sales – May 26th
Everyone sells for a living, whether you are a service provider, an employee, a CEO or carry a line of products. Your income is directly related to your ability to connect with people and discover what they need. When people say they don't like sales, they often mean they don't like manipulating, pushing and dishonesty. But many people love connecting, sharing and serving.
Our approach to selling is all about service and lighting up the person on the other end of the phone. There is no hard selling or get 'em techniques in our training. We offer you an opportunity to learn the real art of connecting with people who just happen to be your customers. Discover how lighting people up and appreciative inquiry will move more people and dollars towards you.
Over the past four months, we teamed up with Coach Marie Cavanaugh and our clients for a day of making Sales Calls together. This unique experience is designed for individual Sales Professionals, Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, and Virtual Office workers who can benefit from the structure, support and tools provided by two coaches. Our participants are getting great results including:

“I've noticed a dramatic increase in my energy and enthusiasm for growing my business. I am more focused and productive when part of a team, benefitting from the shared strategies, accountability and energy of the success of any one of us."
“I went on a call with a very positive state of mind which the coach had instilled in me. The call went very well and I landed an opportunity which prior to speaking with the coach, was in my mind, a real long shot and out of my league. When I went in I was convinced there was business waiting for me and sure enough it was there.”
         “This was fun!”

Want to join us? The Age of Engage
Let's Team Up to Make More Sales
   Upcoming Events and Speaking Engagements

The Age of Engage I’ve been reading articles and books on Engagement lately. In Marketing, the discussion centers on engaging customers through social media and other forms of interaction. In the Human Capital arena, employee engagement spells the difference between profitability and failure.
Research has shown that highly engaged teams:

Produce 32% higher Earnings Per Share
   Produce 263% higher compound growth
   Are twice as profitable
Are three times more likely to reach target

 What is engagement?
The Corporate Executive Board defines it this way: “Engagement is the extent to which employees commit to something or someone in their organization, how hard they work and how long they stay as a result of that commitment.” This is not just intellectual assent to your company’s vision or mission. It involves the heart as well as the head. It’s also not the same as “happy” employees. Engaged employees may or may not be happy. We are talking about the willingness to give the extra effort needed to succeed.
What are some of the key ingredients to creating an engaged workforce?
Fit. People are more engaged when they are a fit with their manager, the job, the company culture and their team.
The Manager. A person’s boss is the most integral part of the engagement puzzle. An astounding 76% of employees who leave a company do so because of their boss!
“The beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, norms and practices of people within an organization, particularly the leaders, determines the level of engagement. Highly engaged teams are energized, enthusiastic and passionate about their business, love engaging customers and exceeding expectations” Engagement is a powerful force that governs the organization’s “way of life”. (The People Pill by Ken Wright.)
 The Stakes are High
When you consider how many hours a day we spend at work, the enormity of this issue is staggering. How we engage affects our health, our wealth and our relationships.
We’d love to hear from you:

What causes you to put forth that extra discretionary effort on the job?
What challenges do you face in engaging your team?
What skills do you need to learn to be a more effective leader?
What can The Quest Connection do to help you attain your leadership goals?

We stand ready to assist you in developing your engaged workforce through solutions designed to:

Develop the managers and leaders on your team
Hire for best fit for the job
Direct you to resources that measure Engagement in a meaningful way
Facilitate the conversations that matter in your organization so you can engage your team in creating a better organization.

Assessments for HiringSmart – the HiringSmart Toolbox
As a HiringSmart affiliate, The Quest Connection is delighted to offer a suite of powerful assessment tools so business owners and managers can recruit the talent that best fits their culture and the job at hand. Here are two assessments that are best sellers.
The Profile XT™ is a multi-purpose assessment that is used for selection, coaching, training, promotion, managing, and succession planning. It is a powerful and dynamic management tool that employs 21st Century technology to put the right people in the right jobs. It is administered on the Internet and reports are immediately available.
The Profile XT™ is a "Total person" assessment that has a myriad of uses. It measures the job-related qualities that make a person productive – Thinking and Reasoning Style, Behavioral Traits, and Occupational Interests. It is convenient and easy to use on the Internet - no administrator or proctoring is required.
The Profile XT is used for placement, promotion, self-improvement, coaching, succession planning, and job description development. Our clients tell us The Profile XT is three to five times more effective than any other assessment they have used. It is a versatile management tool that develops Job Match Patterns that can be customized by company, department, manager, position, geography, or any combination of these factors. Once a candidate takes the assessment, there are several reports that can be created to advance the development of the participant.
Step One Survey II™ lowers an employer’s risk when hiring people to positions of trust and responsibility. Employee theft costs employers an average of $9 per employee, per day - that’s over $2,000 a year, per employee, that comes off the bottom line. This survey helps to identify reliable job candidates with integrity and work ethic who are drug free. The Step One Survey II is how companies protect themselves from theft of money, property, time, and other assets.
Contact us for information and pricing on these and other powerful assessment tools.

Learn to Love Selling - have more fun playing on a team
Last month Coach Marie Cavanaugh and I launched a new sales approach, Learn to Love Selling – Let’s Team up for More Sales. Enjoyment and results are some of the benefits of playing on a team. For 6 hours our team had access to immediate coaching, hourly team meetings and all the instructions they needed on how to light up their clients. The results were delightful! One player closed pending sales, turned a sale that was in jeopardy into a win and scheduled a number of free inspections with the potential for sales. Another player had team support during a flat tire surprise on the way to a training event and arrived only 20 minutes late full of energy and gratitude. Marie and I made some sales of our own because selling is more fun when you play on a team!
 Here’s how it works:
At 10 am Eastern time, you'll dial in to a teleconferencing bridge. (There are no port charges, just a long distance charge if you don’t have unlimited Long Distance.) You will meet your team mates and coaches, receive 15 minutes of training on new approaches to sales calls and get excited about making calls.
At each hour after that until 4 pm, check in with the team for 5 minutes. Learn ways to keep your energy high, fresh approaches to connecting with your clients and finish the day celebrating new connections. PLUS, you have access to two professional coaches during the day in case you need some on-the-spot Coaching to win!
To register, visit www.thequestconnection.com/learntoloveselling.htm. $39.99 per person. You will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare and how to participate.
If you’d like to bring this program into your company, please contact Siobhan on 631.277.8880 or visit www.thequestconnection.com/contact.lasso so we can tailor our approach to your Sales environment.
Save the Dates!March 15th - Just for Women Only - Harmony in the Home workshop and dinner at Runyon's of Seaford, NY. Contact Grail at 1.516.221.2112 to reserve your spot. March 20th - Harmony in the Home - Bay Shore location. For couples and individuals who want to work on their Relationship in a fun and creative way. 1pm to 4pm.

The Quest Connection announces HiringSmart Alliance

I am pleased to let you know that The Quest Connection recently partnered with HiringSmart, a human capital strategy firm that helps companies re-think old recruiting practices to boost productivity and achieve better bottom line results. HiringSmart is the world’s first résumé-free hiring system, focusing instead on identifying applicants’ beliefs, attitudes and values towards work - all of which are reliable predictors of their level of success on the job. When I first met with HiringSmart founders Jan van der Hoop and Tim Brennan, I was immediately impressed with their new paradigm for recruiting and managing talent, much better suited for staffing in a post-industrial world than our current outdated hiring practices. The HiringSmart system does not look for the right key words in a candidate’s résumé or where they’ve worked before, but rather determines what matters at each client’s workplace and then helps them measure it in potential candidates. Here are some startling “eye-opener” facts describing the current workforce environment: 80 per cent of the workforce in North America is a poor fit for their job, costing the economy billions of dollars annually, much of which is simply a result of outdated recruiting approaches (only 2 out of 10 people are fully engaged in their job). 86 per cent of interviews do not successfully identify superior people for the job. 94 per cent of senior HR professionals surveyed believe their current workforce is unprepared to deliver on company goals and meet business challenges What better reasons to tap into a new hiring paradigm? The Quest Connection is bringing the HiringSmart system to New York area businesses to help clients: Recruit the best talent Engage existing talent and retain key players Among the benefits: Identify the candidates who look most like your top performers Reduce the amount of time spent sifting through résumés and organizing interviews Find ways to maximize existing employees’ contribution (particularly important to help weather the storm in this unpredictable economic climate) I recommend embracing the HiringSmart process. It’s a win-win situation for companies: employees that fit their job role are more engaged, more engaged employees are more productive, and more productivity results in a better bottom line. To learn more, click here. Or here and contact us to see if this is a fit for your company.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays & Best Wishes for 2010!

Harvesting 2009
Just as a farmer harvests his crop at the end of the growing season, we can harvest the good that came to us in 2009.
Over the holidays is a great time to reflect on these questions to ask yourself:

What lessons did I learn in 2009?
Who was I this year? A dreamer, an achiever, in a cocoon, ready to fly?
What qualities did I develop in myself that I can bring forward into the New Year?
What do I want to be sure to release now and leave in the old year?
We invite you to carve out some quiet time to reflect and review and complete 2009. That will give you an open space from which to create an amazing 2010.
Siobhan in the News
Earlier this month, I was featured in an article in Long Island’s Newsday. The article covered Baby Boomers who have made the transition to the field of Coaching. I shared my own story of moving from a successful career in Sales Management to the call of my heart. I offer it as a message of hope to someone you may know (yourself even?) who is in transition in this year of the “Great Disruption.” I firmly believe that there is a place for each of us to express our gifts and talents in a rewarding way. If you know someone in transition who would like a coach in their corner as they make a career transition, have them call us. For the article online, visit http://www.thequestconnection.com/downloads/Newsday-Coaching-12-5-09.pdf.
Warm wishes for a bright New Year filled with peace, health, abundance and love!
 Siobhan

Thriving in Today’s World
Earlier this month, I was the featured speaker at my parents’ s_ocial club, the Then and Now Club. Many of the members have known me since I was 10 years old. I was incredibly touched as I heard my father announce, “I have known this month's speaker all her life…” I chose the topic of listening to one another and had the members tell each other stories of who made you who you are today. I was inspired by StoryCorps, a non-profit organization in NYC that records stories of ordinary Americans. Their stories were fascinating and you could feel the appreciation in the room intensify just by speaking out loud about the gift a parent or teacher or boss had given each individual.
I shared about the incredible gift I’ve experienced as a professional coach: Listening to the stories of my clients’ lives. I also described what professional Coaching is about.
It still surprises me that 15 years into the modern age of business and life coaching, that there are people who don’t know about this incredible resource. Thirteen years ago, when I started my coaching career, people would say to me “What sport? You don’t look athletic.” I hardly ever hear that today. The readers of this newsletter will have heard of, and even availed themselves of a coach, but there are still people who don’t know about business and life coaching.
Back at the Then and Now Club, I overheard someone say, "It’s amazing how the Irish don’t need to go to people like that.” The comment was meant to highlight the power of the Irish community as a support system and the resilience of the Irish people. Yet, I was stunned. Do you think Padraig Harrington (the f_amous Irish golfer on the PGA tour) doesn’t use a coach? It speaks to the belief that asking for help is for weak people, or that coaching is just for remediation.
Coaching focuses clients on their strengths and assets and how to capitalize on their talents and gifts. It’s for successful people, yet the attitude prevails that coaching is for remediation. Even the CEO of Google had a similar attitude about coaching when it was suggested by one of his mentors that he hire a coach. His actual experience of coaching changed his mind. You can hear it in his own words at http://tinyurl.com/kqxkat.
A 2008 study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Association Resource Centre Inc. for the International Coach Federation, revealed these promising statistics:

83 % of coaching clients reported being “very satisfied” with their coaching experience.
96 % of coaching clients indicated they would repeat the coaching process, given the same circumstances.
Companies that use or have used professional coaching for business reasons have seen a median return on investment of 700%, or 7 times the initial investment.
80% of individuals have experienced a positive change in self-esteem/self-confidence as a result of partnering with a professional coach.
This Sunday, the Long Isl_and Coaching Alliance is hosting an event to highlight coaching as a resource for successful people who may be in transition now as we all transition through the Great Disruption. (It’s not your typical cyclical recession after all. See this month’s book selection for more on what’s really happening.)
I’m honored to be speaking on a panel on the topic of “How to Thrive in Today’s World.” There will be door prizes, a wonderful keynote speech by Judy Martin, News 12 Long Is_land and Founder of WorkLifeNation.com, and an oppor_tunity to meet New York’s top coaches.
My vision is that people would know about coaches as a resource the way we know to take aspirin for a headache or to see a dentist for a toothache. When you’re in transition, you just got promoted, you have a big vision, you want to improve your relationships, you want to grow your company, etc., you know to reach out to a professional Coach. Imagine a world where everyone has a Mom, a Dad and a Coach to support their greatness!
Thanks to my Mom, Dad and my numerous coaches who have made me who I am today.
 Warmly, Siobhan.

In Transition

Are you in transition? Recently, I attended a professional meeting and fully a third of the attendees identified themselves as “in transition.” They meant that they are in between jobs. Yet, the other attendees could also identify themselves as “in transition” since we are all in the midst of a larger “Transition” from the old paradigm economy to a new one. I’ve been moving through my own transition journey from one model of a coaching business to another. It’s been challenging to remember my gifts and strengths during this transition.
While we can usually point to some event in our lives that marks a change, the inner experience often takes longer. Change can be identified by the event: the dog died, the baby was born, the stock market fell, the position was eliminated, and you got the job. The inner journey to emotionally integrating the change is a different matter altogether.
William Bridges, in his book, Transitions, identifies three stages that most of us experience in response to change: Endings, the Neutral Zone, and New Beginnings. Why begin with Endings? Because our energy has been tied up in the “way things were". We may experience sadness or a sense of loss when the familiar is no longer present.
The neutral zone is often a place of confusion. We are changing our habits from the old way to the new way. We’re not quite “in sync” with what to do or how to be. In new beginnings, we often feel a sense of excitement and we have moved through the loss felt in endings and the discomfort of the neutral zone. We get "in the groove".
Imagine a potted plant being transplanted from its small pot to a larger pot. It has spent its sheltered life in the familiar surroundings of the pot it lives in. It has grown and become root bound. In fact, it cannot grow any further. Its roots are trying to stretch as the plant grows, but they keep hitting the confining boundaries of the pot walls, locking it in, restricting its growth. Eventually, the urge to expand and escape the confines of the pot it has always called home becomes overwhelming, and even the plant wants a change before it withers and dies.
A master gardener steps in to handle the transplant from small pot to larger pot. The plant is literally uprooted exposing it to the elements, away from the comfort, security and life necessity – the soil it had been living in. It has no idea what’s in store. When the roots are swaying in the breeze, it’s hard to know where the edges are or to feel grounded.
Soon, the plant is in its new home. It is grounded and surrounded by life giving soil and nutrients. It feels secure and it has room for expansion, more room for its roots, a more solid foundation. If a plant could smile, it probably would, because while the transition from the smaller pot to the larger was not a pleasant experience, the final transformation made it all worthwhile.
Now imagine the journey travelled by a common garden insect in its transformation from caterpillar to beautiful butterfly. Its entire life is just one transition to another. To the caterpillar, who has had the freedom of crawling along the earth and up trees and plants, eating whatever and whenever, ending up in a restrictive cocoon must seem like the end of the world. The changes he undergoes are monumental, as in the cocoon stage, there is a complete change in the cellular make-up of the caterpillar.
In the cocoon stage, there is a sense of struggle and restriction. It can't move. It can't do anything. The urge to stretch its wings is so powerful, it pushes and wriggles and struggles, but to no avail. Getting out of that cocoon is a major exercise.
When the transition is complete, the creature will have more freedom and more ability than it ever had as a caterpillar – and it will be better looking! It went through difficult transitions, but a greater transformation was the result, and as it flies off into beautiful gardens, it probably doesn't even remember what it endured to reach that stage.
If we had cut the cocoon open to release the butterfly from its prison before its time, before it was ready, perhaps thinking we were doing it a kindness, we would have killed it. It wouldn't have been ready or prepared. It needed to go through that transition of stretching and wriggling and struggling inside the cocoon to strengthen itself in preparation for its new life.
Likewise for us, while our transitions may be stressful, we also have the opportunity to attain positive transformations and experience personal growth that will lead us to a new existence. The struggle is part of the journey.
This doesn't mean we have to like it or remain as motionless victims of chance and circumstance, because unlike the plant and the caterpillar, we have the intelligence and capability to influence our transitions and our outcomes. We might not be able to make huge alterations to our transitional circumstances, but we aren't necessarily powerless to do anything either.
Some strategies you can employ to help you through your personal transitions include:
·Maintain a positive attitude. Focus on positive outcomes. Worrying will not change anything and will only cause you ill health, so why worry about things you cannot change – focus on the things you can change instead.
·Identify where you are in the transition journey. Just naming where you are can be helpful.
·Accept your feelings. It is okay to admit that you feel vulnerable – we all do. Accept your feelings as natural and don't berate yourself. Compared to the length of your entire life, any challenges imposed upon you now are only momentary interruptions.
·Remember that sometimes we have to knock down the old in order to rebuild the new, and sometimes, challenges provide us with an opportunity to prioritize what is important in our lives and get things into perspective.
·Look for opportunities – seek out potential silver linings in your personal clouds. Some experiences really can be blessings in disguise. A lost job now can be the impetus we need to start our own business, which we may have been too afraid to do before. Need proof that even in the midst of transition and a challenging economy that it is possible to achieve success? The i-pod was invented during a recession and now provides enjoyment and information for millions.
·Keep the faith. You are in the middle of a process of change that can lead to greater possibilities for everyone concerned, but you are not alone. You are sharing this transformational process with every person on the planet. Look around you. Who could use your support or even a positive word of encouragement?
·Practice self-care. Give yourself more support than you have ever given yourself before. The Transition process takes more energy from us and it’s imperative that we replenish ourselves.
·Get support. Reach out to friends and loved ones. Hire a coach or a therapist if need be. You don’t have to do anything alone.
Regardless of what transitions we are experiencing in life, it is important to realize the potential for amazing transformations waiting for us at the end, and remembering that nobody can dictate how we choose to respond to life's challenges or the attitude we choose to take.
I’m almost through to the other side of my journey and regaining a sense of energy and enthusiasm for my work. To mark the new stage, I am changing the name of my business to “The Quest Connection.” I’ll be sharing more about what that means in a future issue of “The Quest.” If you or your organization are moving through a Transition, contact me to see how I can help make the process easier for you. © Quest Coaching International Inc. 2009.
